Bacon and Maple Paczki!
Tuesday was Paczki Day here in Detroit. For those outside of the midwest, paczki are basically filled doughnuts. They have a more traditional meaning, but that’s not the focus here.
We sampled paczki filled with liquor, which were quite good. The highlight, however, was the Pig candy and maple paczek (by @joefoodie) from Lazybone’s Smokehouse in Roseville.
Pig candy is smoked bacon coated in brown sugar. It’s sweet, salty, and peppery. A perfect food. The maple glaze was super sugary, but worked well against the bacon. The paczek was not filled with anything, which goes against tradition but so does candied bacon. I’d definitely eat this again.

Probably the most publicized restaurant in Detroit is Slows BBQ. Coverage in the New York Times, segments on the Travel Channel, and mentioned in numerous other media outlets have made Slows Detroit’s go to destination for anyone visiting the city.
Sure, the location is cool and the beer list is fantastic, but people travel to Corktown for the food. Check out The Longhorn (by TheHungryDudes). Tender beef brisket, shredded smoked gouda, onion marmalade, and spicy sauce are stacked on Texas toast.
It’s easy to get lost in this sandwich. Each of the flavors intermingle perfectly giving a different taste sensation with each bite. At one moment, smokiness shines through followed by a spicy kick from the sauce then the delicate sweet earthiness of the marmalade.
The Longhorn is a special sandwich.

Restaurant of the Day: Round House BBQ
Seems like a new BBQ joint is opening every week in the metro Detroit area. Round House BBQ is one of the latest to open. Their macaroni and cheese (by TheHungryDudes) harkens back to cafeteria style mac & cheese, but in a good way. Sharp cheese sauce covers soft spiral macaroni - no golden brown crust, but this is a comforting side dish.

Restaurant of the Day: Lockhart’s BBQ
Our most popular photo in 2010 was the Quadruple Bypass (by TheHungryDudes).
Lockhart’s has more on their menu than just the Quadruple Bypass. Take a look at some more of their offerings in our Lockhart’s Flickr Set.

#325 Kitchen Sink Fries (by TheHungryDudes)
Hand cut BBQ fries, house made red chile, aged cheddar, bacon, pico de gallo, and smoked jalapenos.
Chili cheese fries are already awesome, but when top shelf ingredients, super fresh veggies, and lots of bacon are added then you have another foodstuff altogether.

#317 Quadruple Bypass (by TheHungryDudes)
Smoked bacon, ham, sausage, pulled pork, and smoked cheddar on a Kaiser roll. Over a pound of meat, this is a huge sandwich. The challenge is to eat the whole thing in under 10 minutes. We haven’t attempted it yet…
Notice the side of green beans. They cancel out the sandwich. Healthiness restored!

#313 Pulled Pork Sandwich (by TheHungryDudes)
The epitome of what pulled pork should be - smoky, tender, and luscious. Hunks of melt in your mouth fat intermingle with charred bits of sweet porcine goodness.
A vinegary cole slaw is on the side. A perfect companion to the pork.

#312 The Hog Trough (by TheHungryDudes)
We ate this approximately 2 hours ago and my hands still smell like smoked meat. This platter has 4 ribs, sliced beef brisket, and house made & smoked sausage sitting atop a pile of hand cut fries.
Just check out the smoke ring on the brisket. This is some serious BBQ.
